About Us
Our Story, Our Mission.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Charity Inc. formerly known as: Farmingdale Turkey Bowl Charity Inc. was created to help local children and families and shelters in need.
Initially in 2006 the Turkey Bowl charity event was created to honor and continue the work by then recently deceased Raymond Fettig of Farmingdale. The Farmingdale Observer posted “Remembering Ray” by then Mayor George J. Graf. He wrote that “Ray was remembered as an inveterate volunteer who dedicated his life to coaching, teaching and assisting the children of our community. He coached, he also wrote that “Ray's daughter Patricia, during his eulogy, asked that to honor her father that everyone tries to do one unselfish act of kindness each day. She said it didn't have be anything elaborate. Just smiling at a stranger, asking how your elderly neighbor is, assisting someone in need. It's a very simple request. Obviously if you have the time to coach or assist any one of our sports or community groups, that's even better.” The annual Turkey Bowl was run under the Farmingdale Soccer Club through 2014. In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2013 the tournament raised close to $40,000 which were used to help local families. Some families are still displaced, their homes in disrepair. Each year participants are asked to bring cans of food or cleaning supplies and new unwrapped toys. Event T-Shirts are sold as an additional source of income. In 2015 The Farmingdale Turkey Bowl Charity Inc. was officially established as a New York State and federally approved not-for-profit Corporation. We work with individual families and other non profits by collecting food, cleaning supplies, and new unwrapped toys at the annual soccer tournament. Donations collected are usually used to buy warm coats, blankets and toys. No one that works for or with us is monetarily compensated. All benefits come from the satisfaction of helping others in needs, making new friends, and enjoying the day. Non profits include: John Theissen Children's Foundation The Harry Chapin Foundation Peace Valley Haven Inc. The Children's Aid Society Harvest For the World Awixa Youth Home In 2016 we added an additional annual project to provide backpacks filled with school supplies to kids from financially struggling families. Each year we grow the project and are able to increase the amount of help we can provide. In 2017 we updated the charity name to Neighbors Helping Neighbors Charity Inc. in order not to limit the perception of our reach to one town. As a small charity most of what we do is local but when we learn about a family or kids further away we try to help there as well. We are so thankful to everyone who has made charitable donations and continues to do so. We are grateful to all the tournament participants, their families, and volunteers who help in all facets of the event and organization, The Town of Oyster Bay who provides the soccer fields and all of our sponsors. Thank you for your tireless effort and endless support. Neighbors Helping Neighbors Charity Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law. |
